Series on Cannabis, Sexual Health, and Philanthropy Launches in Portland

The Cascade AIDS Project (CAP)'s Junior Board, Jayne, and Ladies of Paradise have teamed up to bring you an event that encompasses sexual health, philanthropy, and cannabis. They have named the series The Lady Business, but note that "all gender identities, friends and allies" are welcome. The first event will take place in Portland on January 10th from 6-9 pm.

While these topics may seem unrelated at first, they all deal with subject matter that many people in the general public may shy away from in conversation, and that is exactly why these groups have joined forces to offer outreach in an effort to help give people more education on each of them.

CAP's Junior Board has put this together, and hopes this will be the first in a series of events focusing on Sexual Health, Philanthropy and Cannabis. Kim Lundin is the Development Director for CAP and said, "CAP formed our Junior Board to help develop the next-generation of nonprofit leaders. With this event we are creating a much needed space for women leaders, and I'm excited about the opportunities it will bring."

Lauren Short is a CAP Junior Board member who spearheaded this collaboration. Short explained, "The Lady Business series is such a wonderful opportunity to bring more awareness to sexual health. Society is currently not provided with enough education when it comes to testing and treatment, and as a result we stigmatize it just like cannabis. By having more open discussions, offering education and resources we can drastically improve the attitude and increase funding to our health care. We should approach STI and HIV testing with the same mentality as we do about going to the doctor for the flu, and I am so grateful for all the support we are receiving. It is astonishing to see so many people truly care about bettering our community."

Briana Burke is the Manager at Jayne, one of the most celebrated cannabis retail shops/dispensaries in Portland. Burke said, "The empowerment of women coupled with community outreach are the corner stones for change and progress. That is why Jayne has always taken a strong stand on community, from free BBQs to our monthly local cause donation. 2018 was a great year for Jayne, and we were able to donate over $7600 to local non profits with the support of our vendors and customers. Jayne is kicking off 2019 with an extra focus on community and education ranging from Stoned Yoga (similar to the series in 2018) to Sexual Health.”
